Press release: Irish project ‘EasyPro’ showcased at Energy Trends 2026 in Berlin

Energy Trends 2026 Conference
On 29th-30th June 2026, the EasyPro Project was represented at ‘Energy Trends 2026’, the 4th European Congress on Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development in Berlin, Germany. The event gathered researchers, scientists, entrepreneurs and practitioners from across the world to share advanced, ecofriendly energy solutions for competitive advantage and cost savings in the progressive industrial and business sectors.
EasyPro coordinator, Dr Luciano De Tomassi from IERC – International Energy Research Centre, delivered a keynote presentation on EasyPro, an EU-funded project that develops an Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) facilitation service for Irish universities.
What is EPC?
EPC is a contract in which an Energy Service Company partners with a building owner to install energy-saving measures in their buildings, guaranteeing a certain level of energy savings and getting paid based on the amount of energy saved over time. In his presentation, Luciano explained how this approach is superior to the traditional model due to its provision of guaranteed energy savings and necessary expertise, with EasyPro supporting universities throughout their EPC journey.
EasyPro’s EPC facilitation service for Irish universities
EasyPro’s facilitation service makes the EPC process faster and more cost-effective, resolving the two main issues that public sector bodies like universities face when attempting to procure EPC. This approach is quickly gaining traction in Ireland, with the Minister for Climate, Energy and Environment Darragh O’Brien recently issuing a letter to public sector CEOs concerning their obligation to promote and ensure the use of EPC where technically and economically feasible. There is also an urgent need for Irish universities and public bodies to meet its Climate Action Plan targets by 2030, which EasyPro supports through sustained energy reduction.
Currently, EasyPro is working with Technological University Dublin and University College Cork to pilot its EPC facilitation service. However, Luciano notes that once EasyPro has demonstrated that a standardised EPC process can be successfully implemented in the Irish Higher Education Sector, it plans to roll out the service to the rest of the Irish public sector and beyond to public sectors in other EU Member States:
‘Energy Trends was a great opportunity to present EasyPro to an international audience and gain valuable insights into the broader energy priorities of communities worldwide. Among our project’s aims is to demonstrate that a standardised EPC procurement process can be successfully implemented in not only Irish universities, but in public sectors across the EU.’
The event featured presentations and panel discussions by participants from universities and research institutions in Europe, Asia, Australia and the US.
