EasyPro Newsletter: Issue 3
Welcome to the third edition of the EasyPro quarterly newsletter!
It has been a productive three months for EasyPro, an EU project that will make Irish universities carbon neutral through Energy Performance Contracts (EPCs). In this newsletter, we will recap all the key activities that have taken place from January to March 2025, including the EasyPro General Assembly event, our new BlueSky account, the first EasyPro pilot in Technological University Dublin (TUD), and much more.

EasyPro’s General Assembly Meeting
On 15th January, the EasyPro consortium met at Carr Communications in Dublin for the EasyPro General Assembly meeting. The aim of the meeting was for the EasyPro project partners to share updates on their respective work packages and plan the next steps of the project. The meeting featured an introduction by EasyPro’s Project Advisor, Dr Vivian Doriza from the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), who highlighted how EasyPro aligns with EU strategies to combat global warming.

EasyPro’s first pilot
At the General Assembly meeting, the EasyPro consortium was joined by the project’s stakeholders and Energy Service Companies (ESCOs), and they came to a very exciting decision: EasyPro’s first pilot Energy Performance Contract (EPC) will be implemented at Technological University Dublin (TUD).

Each university that EasyPro works with has asked for a detailed list of potential energy efficiency projects called ‘project bundles’, whereby a combination of energy efficiency building refurbishments including LED lighting upgrades, HVAC system upgrades and solar PV panels are installed with the purpose of reducing carbon emission and saving money. These bundles will be developed with estate teams to confirm which measures will be included in each bundle. Our project partner Lawler Sustainability, who designs the EasyPro solution, has attended TUD with Decarbonisation and Estates leads.

EasyPro will hold a workshop to showcase this pilot, which will be of great interest to other universities. Any public body who does not reduce their carbon usage by 50% by the end of 2030 will be subject to large fines, a target which has been set by the Irish Government’s Climate Action Plan. But don’t panic – as you’ve read above, EasyPro is here to help!
What we’re reading
This month, we are reading a recent publication by our project coordinator Dr Luciano De Tommasi and IERC partners Ruchi Agrawal and Padraig Lyons. Click here to read their overview of the key decision-making points when implementing EPCs in rented commercial properties.
We are also reading RTE’s latest report on Ireland’s climate targets, which says that Ireland now faces a €26 billion bill if the EU’s climate targets are missed: Ireland faces €26bn bill if EU climate targets missed.
